ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1- 2022
Standard 90.1 is a long-standing benchmark for commercial building energy codes in the U.S. and worldwide. It sets the minimum energy-efficiency requirements for designing and constructing most buildings and sites, excluding low-rise residential. It applies to new buildings, additions, systems, and equipment, and serves as a key reference for engineers and design professionals. The 2022 edition includes more than 80 updates to the 2019 version. Major changes include new minimum on-site renewable energy requirements, an optional Mechanical System Performance Path using the TSPR metric, and added rules to address thermal bridging. Other updates expand the scope to cover entire sites, introduce new energy credit options for customized efficiency improvements, provide guidance for using carbon emissions or site/source energy as alternative performance metrics, and increase efficiency requirements for commercial rooftop units along with a new SEER2/HSPF2 metric for small air-cooled heat pumps.
