NFPA 99: Standard for Health Care Facilities, 2018 Edition
The 2018 edition of NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code strengthens and clarifies performance criteria using a risk-based approach that focuses on the level of risk to patients and staff rather than the type of building. The Code covers installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and safe practices for health care equipment, systems, and facilities, including medical gas and vacuum systems. Updates in this edition expand the Code’s scope, such as clearer risk-assessment responsibilities, approval of oxygen concentrators as central supply sources, allowance of corrugated medical tubing, reorganization of electrical system requirements, new provisions for wireless phone and clinical information system integration, consolidated hyperbaric ITM requirements, and a new chapter dedicated to dental gas and vacuum piping. It also adds fire extinguisher selection criteria for spaces unique to health care settings. NFPA 99 helps keep facilities compliant and safe for patients and staff, serving contractors, engineers, facility managers, AHJs, system installers, insurers, and manufacturers.
