Requirements?

Construction Contractors: Iowa law requires individuals and businesses performing construction work and earning $2,000 or more annually from those activities to register with the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL). Registration is generally required for new construction, additions, alterations, repairs, installations, reconstruction, and demolition projects. Contractors working on state or local government projects must also be registered. Local jurisdictions may impose additional registration or permitting requirements.

Contractors performing plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems work must obtain the appropriate Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Contractor license in addition to contractor registration.

Electricians: Individuals performing electrical contracting work or operating as self-employed electricians in Iowa must hold the appropriate electrical contractor license. Electrical Contractor license applicants must either hold or employ a licensed Master Electrician and be properly registered as a contractor with the state.

Master Electrician: Applicants typically must hold a Journeyman Electrician license, document the required experience, and pass a Board-approved examination with a minimum score of 70%.

Journeyman Electrician: Applicants generally must complete an approved apprenticeship program, document four years of electrical experience, and pass a Board-approved examination with a minimum score of 70%.

Iowa also provides pathways for certain out-of-state electricians and experienced license holders to qualify for licensure based on education, experience, examination history, and continuing education requirements.

Residential Electrical Licensing: Residential electrical work includes wiring and electrical installations in one- to four-family dwellings and associated accessory structures located on the same property.

Residential Electrical Contractor: To obtain a Residential Electrical Contractor license, an applicant must hold a Residential Master Electrician or Class B Master Electrician license and be registered as a contractor with the State of Iowa.

Residential Master Electrician: Applicants must hold a qualifying electrical license, document the required experience, and pass a Board-approved Residential Master Electrician examination.

Residential Electrician: Applicants generally qualify by completing the required combination of electrical experience, apprenticeship training, trade school education, and passing a Board-approved Residential Electrician examination.

Reciprocity: Iowa may issue Journeyman and Master Electrician licenses without examination to applicants licensed in states that have reciprocal agreements with Iowa. Applicants must hold an active qualifying license, meet experience requirements, provide required documentation, and pay applicable fees.

Special Electrician Endorsements: Iowa offers specialized electrical licenses for:

Irrigation System Wiring
Sign Installation
Disconnecting and Reconnecting Existing Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems

Special Electricians must be registered as contractors and maintain at least $1,000,000 in liability insurance. Certain HVAC and mechanical license holders may perform limited air conditioning and refrigeration disconnect/reconnect work without obtaining a separate Special Electrician endorsement.

Alarm System Licensing: Companies that install, maintain, inspect, or repair fire alarm, nurse call, and security alarm systems in Iowa must obtain an Alarm System Contractor license and designate at least one qualified Responsible Managing Employee (RME). Contractors must maintain state contractor registration, liability insurance, and meet applicable certification requirements. Licenses are valid for three years.

Employees performing alarm system work must hold an Alarm System Technician license with the appropriate endorsements. Technician trainees may work only under the direct supervision of a licensed technician or RME. All applicants are subject to state and federal criminal background checks.

Fire Protection System Licensing: Companies installing, inspecting, maintaining, or repairing fire protection systems, including sprinkler and suppression systems, must obtain a Fire Protection System Contractor license and designate a qualified RME. Contractors must maintain liability insurance, state contractor registration, and the required industry certifications. Contractor licenses are valid for one year.

Individuals performing fire protection system work must obtain a Fire Protection System Technician license with the appropriate endorsements. Technician licenses are valid for two years, while trainee licenses are valid for one year and require direct supervision.

Commercial Explosives Licensing: Companies involved in the manufacture, sale, distribution, storage, or use of explosives must obtain a Commercial Explosives Contractor license. Employees handling explosives must hold a Commercial Explosives Blaster license. Applicants must meet training, experience, and background requirements and are subject to criminal history reviews. Licenses are valid for three years.

Plumbing, HVAC/R, Hydronics, and Mechanical Contractors: Businesses performing plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, hydronic, sheet metal, or mechanical work must obtain the appropriate contractor license through the Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board.

General licensing requirements include:

Minimum age of 18
Contractor registration with the state
Proof of liability insurance
A minimum $5,000 surety bond
A valid unemployment insurance account number
A permanent business location
A licensed Master of Record for each discipline performed

Contractors with employees must maintain workers' compensation coverage. Out-of-state contractors are generally required to file a $25,000 surety bond unless exempt through Iowa DOT prequalification. Licenses are typically issued for three-year terms, with fees varying by license type and renewal status.
